Kinship is a preventive and proactive mentoring program for local children and youth ages 5-15. Kinship screens, trains and supports volunteers who are matched with youth who need a positive role model. Matches get together 4 hours a month and have the option to attend Kinship sponsored group activities each month that are social and recreational in nature. Matches are based on geography, shared interests and personalities so it is natural for the matches to do things they both enjoy. Research shows that mentoring builds a support system that nurtures positive character development leading to self confidence and optimism. A public Private Ventures Study showed that weekly meetings with mentors led to improved relationships with peers and parents and increased confidence in school as well as reductions in : First time drug use by 50% First time alcohol use by 33% School absenteeism by 50% Helping youth find their strengths and build success is not an insurmountable challenge. It starts when each of us takes the time and effort to connect with one child and help them grow.
