What the 2 x 4 is to the construction industry, and the 4 x 4 is to the rugged pick-up
truck industry, the 4 x 9 rack card is to the print advertising
industry. It’s the standard. It’s the right size and the right shape, and if you
know what you’re doing, you can get a heck of a lot of information onto one of those
little guys.
First meet the standard, and then rise above the standard
The usefulness of rack cards is that they can pack a lot of information
into a small size which can be carried easily – put into a pocket or dropped onto
a dashboard. Because the industry has a standard to work with, it means that you
can distribute your cards through a variety of distributors or organizations and
the odd s are very high that your cards will fit. And when you think about it, that’s
all you really want. Competing by using 4 x 9 rack cards is sort
of like playing the lottery: you’re dealing with randomness and chance, but if you
don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win. The way to buy a rack card ‘ticket’ is by producing
a product that conforms in size to the industry standard, and then you build on

The new standard is green
There has been a lot of buzz about green printing in the past few years. It seems
like everyone in the industry wants to get on the green printing
and eco friendly printing bandwagon. The sad thing is that a lot of online printing
companies talk a good talk about being green printers and environmentally friendly
printing initiatives, but don’t really walk the walk. How can a business owner or
business professional tell the difference between an environmentally responsible
online printing company, and the ones that are just “green washing”?
Take a look at the websites of online printing services. Almost all of them mention
“going green” or “sustainable printing” practices. Very few of them will have information
about their green printer certification status. An online discount printing service
that is serious about green printing and environmental stewardship will be FSC-certified.
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organization that helps
ensure that paper and other wood products are sourced from well-managed forests,
and that the wood was not harvested from clear?cutting operations, or from rain
forests, or disturbed or took advantage of indigenous peoples who live in and around
the forested lands.
