If the purpose of a postcard is to send your message as cheaply
as possible, then why concern yourself with full color printing?
Isn’t that like serving Spam on your fine china? Not at all. In reality, these are
not contradictory concepts. Look at it this way: fireflies (lightning bugs) are
very small, and they fly around in the dark. Who would ever see them if they didn’t
flash a tiny green light? Well, obviously they don’t flash their lights for the
purpose of attracting kids – although it does have that effect. No, their target
audience is other fireflies.
First, you gots to get their attention
OK, maybe that’s not the best way to explain the value of color post cards,
but here’s the point: people notice color. It’s wired into the brain to notice it.
You can’t look at a painting, or a poster, a postcard, or even
a postage stamp, for that matter, and not pay attention to the various shades of
color. Try it sometime; it’s impossible. And so once you have someone paying attention
to something like the color scheme, you are half-way there to getting them to pay
attention to your message. If your message is in black and white, then you are depending
on your audience to take the trouble to care about your message. If you haven’t
interested them indirectly in your message, you may not interest them directly either.
Full color printing can do half the work for you.
Fireflies appreciate your concern for the environment
There has been a lot of buzz about green printing in the past few years. It seems
like everyone in the industry wants to get on the green printing
and eco friendly printing bandwagon. The sad thing is that a lot of online printing
companies talk a good talk about being green printers and environmentally friendly
printing initiatives, but don’t really walk the walk. How can a business owner or
business professional tell the difference between an environmentally responsible
online printing company, and the ones that are just “green washing”?
Take a look at the websites of online printing services. Almost all of them mention
“going green” or “sustainable printing” practices. Very few of them will have information
about their green printer certification status. An online discount printing service
that is serious about green printing and environmental stewardship will be FSC-certified.
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organization that helps
ensure that paper and other wood products are sourced from well-managed forests,
and that the wood was not harvested from clear-cutting operations, or from rain
forests, or disturbed or took advantage of indigenous peoples who live in and around
the forested lands.
