Magazines come and go. That’s a fact of life. Magazines, like other forms of advertising,
exist to fulfill a purpose. They have to find an audience, and quickly. The thing
which ensures success with a particular magazine is the willingness of the target
audience to recognize its value and to begin to see that it fills a need in their
lives. Thus, magazines are very much theme-and-content driven.
Good magazine publishing requires a flair for showmanship
In what sense is every issue a custom magazine? A magazine has
to be consistent in the sense that the target audience knows what to expect. At
the same time, a magazine has to be fresh and include surprises. It is this combination
of knowing what to expect in general and yet not knowing what to expect in regard
to a specific issue that keeps readers coming back for more. If a magazine either
starts to abruptly change its themes or if it fails to surprise its readership,
then the decline in readership begins. In this way, each issue of a given magazine
is a custom magazine. Each issue must be skillfully crafted in
order to fulfill both needs.
The theme and content aspect of the magazine is up to you, the publisher. But your
print run provider can help you by showing you ways to save money, ways to use color
more effectively, and ways to use special inserts and layouts in order to impress
existing readers and entice new ones.
Make it a custom to protect the environment
There has been a lot of buzz about green printing in the past few years. It seems
like everyone in the industry wants to get on the green printing
and eco friendly printing bandwagon. The sad thing is that a lot of online printing
companies talk a good talk about being green printers and environmentally friendly
printing initiatives, but don’t really walk the walk. How can a business owner or
business professional tell the difference between an environmentally responsible
online printing company, and the ones that are just “green washing”?
Take a look at the websites of online printing services. Almost all of them mention
“going green” or “sustainable printing” practices. Very few of them will have information
about their green printer certification status. An online discount printing service
that is serious about green printing and environmental stewardship will be FSC-certified.
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organization that helps
ensure that paper and other wood products are sourced from well-managed forests,
and that the wood was not harvested from clear-cutting operations, or from rain
forests, or disturbed or took advantage of indigenous peoples who live in and around
the forested lands.
