If you want to get a printed communication into the hands of a
large number of people, it would be impossible to beat cheap postcards.
Of course, they are small, which means that the amount of paper being used is small,
and the amount of ink, and so forth. Naturally, the postage is a small fraction
of first class or even metered mail. And so if you are thinking only in terms of
getting out a message using the smallest number of dollars, the printing of
cheap postcards is the only thing that makes sense.
Sometimes the old fashioned ways work best
What can a cheap postcard do that a mass emailing can’t? In one sense, it can do
the exact same thing: it can deliver a clear and simple message. However, there
are some problems with the email approach: you may not have the email address of
everyone you want to contact; a large percentage of emails get filtered out as spam;
if someone goes for a couple of days and doesn’t check his or her email, then your
message could be lost. But printing a post card – even a cheap one – means that
it will at least get looked at. People always check their mail at some point, and
they pick up and physically handle every item. The value of your cheap postcard
is that it will sit there in the mail box or post office box until it is looked
at. Long after the email has been deleted, your printed postcard
could be just the thing your targeted customer was waiting to receive.
An eco-friendly postcard looks just as good as the old ones
There has been a lot of buzz about green printing in the past few years. It seems
like everyone in the industry wants to get on the green printing
and eco friendly printing bandwagon. The sad thing is that a lot of online printing
companies talk a good talk about being green printers and environmentally friendly
printing initiatives, but don’t really walk the walk. How can a business owner or
business professional tell the difference between an environmentally responsible
online printing company, and the ones that are just “green washing”?
Take a look at the websites of online printing services. Almost all of them mention
“going green” or “sustainable printing” practices. Very few of them will have information
about their green printer certification status. An online discount printing service
that is serious about green printing and environmental stewardship will be FSC-certified.
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organization that helps
ensure that paper and other wood products are sourced from well-managed forests,
and that the wood was not harvested from clear-cutting operations, or from rain
forests, or disturbed or took advantage of indigenous peoples who live in and around
the forested lands.
